a croissant in the oven
You know the American expression "to have a bun in the oven"? It means "to be pregnant." Well, I'm a French teacher, so I can announce with delight that I have a croissant in the oven! Yes, my husband Ed and I are expecting our first child around January 23, 2008. We'll be raising our own bilingual baby--and my nephew Carl will have another kid in the neighborhood to speak French with!

Merci beaucoup! We're thrilled (and apprehensive). But yes, I'm generally enjoying the pregnancy and it's going fine. But I'm not actually talking to Croissant yet--should I be? Did you and your partners speak your different languages to the baby in utero? I'm suddenly panicking about missing out on 15 weeks of potential language exposure!

Croissant will hear you voice no matter what language you're speaking or to whom you are speaking, and that's all that matters right now.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about speaking French to Croissant yet either - I was just being curious. I used to speak to both of mine, but mainly in English. German only came in once they were actually here :)
