"je parle français" in Brain, Child Magazine!

Based on the advice of the amazing teacher, writer, and mother Kelly Feinberg, my friend (and one-third of the inspiration for my daughter's middle name, "Kellamarie"), I subscribed to Brain, Child: The Magazine for Thinking Mothers sight unseen nearly five years ago, when Griffin was an infant.  (Kelly herself was a subscriber even before she married!)

I have thoroughly enjoyed the magazine's thought-provoking and in-depth articles, essays, short stories, debates, book reviews, and letters.  And I felt so excited for Kelly when she had her essay "This Sucks"--about her abrupt weaning of her baby boy after a mastectomy--published in Brain, Child.  (And then, proud and sad when she won a Pushcart Prize for the essay the following year.  Posthumously.)

Part of me, deep down, has wanted to write for the magazine myself too, but I've been content noodling around on this blog (for 6.5 years now!) and doing a series of articles and columns for Multilingual Living.  However, when the previous issue invited readers to respond to the question "How is the way in which you are raising your children different from how you yourself were raised?", I knew that "Bilingually!" would be my reply.

And--yay!--my 200-word answer to their question joins 12 other readers' responses in the current issue of Brain, Child (Winter 2013, page 7).  Subscribe (or buy a sample issue) here!

  3. Waiting to read more... My boys are being raised... tri-lingually... I am French and strictly speak to them in French, our Nanny is Peruvian and mostly speak Spanish to them, and we live in CA, so are exposed to English outside or in any conversations with the neighbors.
I had read that mulit-lingual child start speaking later than other... I am not so sure about this... one of the boys (I have twins) is 14 month old and is expressing himself... I like the way he says "arbre" in French with special care for the "r"... Of course, sometimes he gets the wrong language to the wrong person... For example, he calls rice "Aroso" (the spanish word) when he talks with me... but he will sort it out I am sure !

    1. Hi Gilles--nice to "meet" you! How cool that your sons will be trilingual.

The idea that multilingual children speak noticeably later than other kids is actually a myth! Most of them will start talking within in the normal range, though perhaps at the higher end, but not so late that the pediatrician will be concerned.

Your 14-month-old saying "arbre" sounds adorable! I can't wait till Gwyneth (16 months) can express herself with words (she only has about five so far).

      Keep in touch!
